Water softening systems, often referred to as water softeners or water softening equipment, are devices that are installed for treatment and conversion of hard water into soft water. These water softening systems are primarily installed at the Point of Entry (PoE) of water from public sources into households or the commercial or industrial units. As such, these systems are often referred to as ‘PoE water softening systems’. Water softening equipment commercially available in the market are classified into two types, namely salt-based water softeners and salt-free water softeners. Salt-based water softeners operate on ion-exchange principle while salt-free water softeners are classified on the basis of two types of equipment, namely catalytic softeners and electro-magnetic type water softeners. Of these, the catalytic softeners soften water by employing the technique of altering the molecular structure of the mineral salts and, thus, prevent them from adhering to the surfaces of pipes. This technique does not use salt during the softening process. Meanwhile, the electro-magnetic type salt-free water softeners use magnetic fields to prevent the scale build-up.
Drivers & Trends
Key driving factors identified in the global water softening systems market include robust growth of the construction sector in emerging markets, increasing use of water softening systems in residential sectors and technological advancements in water softening systems, such as the foray of smart water softeners. However, lack of awareness about the benefits of using soft water as opposed to hard water and government regulations and restrictions with regard to the same could pose challenges in the coming years. Some major trends identified in the global water softening systems market are increasing demand for salt-free water softeners, emphasis on obtaining quality certifications and on the use of metered systems over timer-based systems.
