“Kimmy’s Furry Diary” by Christine Wilson

The purrfect book for cat-lovers worldwide

About the Book:

“I am a beautiful tabby and white girl cat with a pretty rounded tummy and a little tabby spot by my nose. I am thirteen and a half years old but I don’t look it because I am so well fed and my coat is so good. My fur is soft and luxurious and anyone can see that I am well loved. I used to live in Bath but Christine (who I call Mum, because she takes care of me) adopted me and later she brought me with her to Northern Ireland – all the way in a taxi because she couldn’t drive. And we live here now. Oh, and did I mention that I am sometimes called Countess Kimmy?” Kimmy is back enjoying an Irish summer and the joys of being spoilt rotten and trying to cope with Fat Club, the V.E.T and the terrifying feral, Guinness. Life couldn’t be much better for her. But as the summer ends she has to face her biggest challenge yet.

Kimmy’s Furry Diary completes this collection of books written by an extremely talented cat from Bath Cats and Dogs Home. A must have book for cat lovers, it combines an enormous amount of heart with a poignant, moving story of how humans and cats alike cope through the tough times.

Having come to live in Ireland, Kimmy is enjoying her life as Christine’s pampered pet despite constant threats of violence from Guinness, the local tomcat. Kimmy travels back and forth between her mum’s and her grandma’s home, with little on her mind save for when her next meal will come and why the vet thinks she is overweight when she is clearly perfect. Then one day Kimmy receives some bad news that will change everything.

The story goes from funny and light-hearted to moving and powerful. This is a very personal account of a difficult time, a book that will make you both laugh and cry and that will give you a rare insight into the lives of cats and the people who love them.

I found this to be a wonderfully written and deeply personal memoir told from the perspective of Kimmy; a girl tabby cat. Alongside Kimmy’s own account Christine, her owner, also shares her inner most thoughts of the joyous and sometimes difficult times in their relationship. Both narratives are deeply moving. I found myself drawing parallels between James Herriot writings and this book. He also managed to convey a deep affinity for animals; including the feline species. He knew how they thought and understood the reasons behind their behaviours. He did not judge them by human standards, he let them just be themselves. And Christine clearly does this too. She strove to be the best companion to Kimmy that she could be and vice versa. She saw Kimmy’s inner world as Kimmy saw it – and fortunately she has the talent and the desire to be able to share that with us, even when they met with their darkest hour. What a wonderful tribute to Kimmy. And even better than that, what a wonderful tribute to their bond! A must read.
