THE WASPI WOMEN OF GLASGOW AND DISTRICT ARE ON THE MARCH
WOMEN DEMONSTRATE FOR FAIR PENSIONS 8.9.16

Location: Shuttle Street, Glasgow
Time: 12 midday
Date: 16th September 2016

Friday, 16th September at noon sees WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) march through Glasgow to protest against the social injustice of the change in the pension age for women born in the 50s.

The March aims to bring to the attention of the wider public the hardship and unfairness suffered by women born after the 5th April 1951 as a result of the Government’s alterations to the State Pension Age (SPA) and, in particular, highlight the lack of notice given to the changes by the Department for Work and Pensions.

The March starts at Shuttle Street, Glasgow at 12 midday, continues down Ingram Street and finishes at George Square. If you would like to join in, log into the WASPI Glasgow and Lanarkshire Facebook page.

Statement from Nicola Sturgeon. First Minister of Scotland, “I very much support the aims of your campaign. While the SNP agrees with pension equalisation we can’t support the deeply unfair manner in which changes have been made. Many thousands of women who have worked hard and contributed to the economy stand to lose out financially. This is deeply unfair. The UK Government must make transitional arrangements for women who, through no fault of their own, are seeing their retirement plans put in jeopardy as a consequence of political decisions. You can be assured that SNP MPs at Westminster will continue to support your aims, as will I.”

MPs from a selection of political parties are coming out in support and will join the march on the 16th: These include:
Margaret Ferrier – SNP MP
Angela Crawley – SNP MP
Patrick Harvey – Green MSP
Patrick Grady – SNP MP
Pauline McNeill – Labour
Alison Thewlis – SNP MP
Ivan McKee – SNP MP
Dr Lisa Cameron – SNP MP

Commenting, Margaret Ferrier MP said: “The WASPI women cannot be dismissed by the Tories – they have paid into the system their whole lives, and deserve to be treated with fairness. “My constituency has the highest number women affected by these changes in Scotland, and the WASPI campaign has my total support. These women deserve to have the situation reviewed and for fair transitional arrangements to be put in place. “I will stand shoulder to shoulder with the WASPI women as they take their protest to the streets in Glasgow, and across the UK.”

Anne Potter, Co-Coordinator for WASPI Glasgow and Lanarkshire added, “The treatment of these women is nothing short of a disgrace. We are asking all women born after 5th April 1951 to join us in our cause. Tell your friends and family. We need your help to keep the pressure on the government. We are loud and proud. We
will not be forgotten.”
