According to a new market report published by Transparency Market Research “Vitreous Tamponades Market – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2014 – 2020”, the global vitreous tamponades market was valued at USD 64.5 million in 2013 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.5% during the forecast period from 2014 to 2020 to reach USD 77.5 million in 2020.

Vitreous tamponades market across the globe is witnessing steady transformation from liquid tamponades to gaseous tamponades. Vitreous substitutes are elastic, biocompatible and transparent surgical adjuncts that are used as postoperative or an intra-operative tool for the treatment of vitreoretinal disorders. Since the introduction of modern vitrectomy techniques in 1970’s, the usage of vitreous substitutes has been accelerated for the reattachment of retina. At present intraocular gases, silicone oil and perfluorocarbon liquids are three most commonly used vitreous substitutes. Steady growth of vitreous tamponades market is witnessed due to increasing incidences of retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker and other retinal disorders. Globally, rise in elderly population is also being considered as one of the major factor that is likely to boost the demand for vitreous tamponades as aged population is more susceptible to retinal breaks and require effective care.

Based on tamponades categories, gaseous and liquid tamponades comprises the overall commercial market for vitreous tamponades. In 2013, in terms of revenue, liquid tamponades emerged as the segment leader, accounting for more than 49% of the market share. This supremacy was witnessed due to widespread use of liquid tamponade over gaseous tamponades in the European and Asian region for the treatment of retinal detachments with multiple breaks (superior and inferior), giant tears, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Furthermore, liquid tamponades market has been categorized into silicone oil and perfluorocarbon liquid. Of these, silicone oil has been identified as the fastest growing segment during the forecast period, 2014-2020. These oils are usually referred to as permanent tamponades and are removed from the site between four months and six weeks after the surgery. However, due to low viscosity and surface tension, conventional silicone oils tend to emulsify and form bubbles inside the eye, which results in conditions such as glaucoma and inflammation. Such adverse events have led to introduction of higher viscosity silicone oil in order to reduce the chances of emulsification. However, high cost associated with silicone oils compared to gases and need for reoperation for the removal of silicone oil certain months after the surgery, are the key reasons that are likely to limit the uptake of silicone oils in the future. Perfluorocarbons on the other hand are likely to witness constant growth rate as these tamponades are primarily used for the reattachment of giant retinal tears.

Gaseous tamponades market on the other hand is expected to demonstrate highest growth rate in the future. Highest growth rate has been attributed to low risk of emulsification, reduced cost and ease of use. Growing incidences of diabetic retinopathy and related-tractional retinal detachments are other reasons that are predicted to boost the growth rate of gaseous tamponades market. SF6, C2F8, and perfluoropropane (C3F8) are the most commonly used gaseous tamponades in vitreoretinal surgeries worldwide. These gases have the advantage of being expansive in nature, allowing the retina and the eyeball to gradually adjust to the occupying volume of the eye for better healing. Amongst these types of gases, C3F8 is preferred by many ophthalmologists in vitreoretinal cases as it provides a higher success rate compared to SF6 due to longer half life, strong tamponade strength, and spontaneous absorption into the blood.

The vitreous tamponades industry is highly fragmented with the presence of small and medium sized manufacturers. Alcon, Inc., Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc., Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center B.V., Fluoron GmbH, Croma Pharma AG, and AL.CHI.MI.A Srl. are the major players operating in this market.
